looking for ideas on using live bait from a kayak. right now I am looking at adding about a 1gallon container to the kayak and using a bubbler type aerator. The issue I am running into is that I have talked to some non-kayaking staff at BPS and they tell me that Shad are too tough to keep alive.
my only live bait experience is with shrimp and all they needed was a bubbler and some ice...
I know that a few folks around here use Kayaks and shad.. how are ya'll transporting/keeping them alive till the sacrifice? _________________ irony: an essential part of a balanced diet |

| What Tom and I use is just a trolling minnow bucket. Works fine for us. If you have an anchor trolly just hook it up to that and position it to the rear of the yak to help reduce drag. |

| I use the same, but I will put it in my lap if I'm trying to make some time. It tends to submarine at a faster paddle. |

I use the same technique and method that Spiney Norman uses, however I have been seriouslyconsidering a bait tube made of PVC pipe if I find myself doing much more in the way of fishing with live bait. _________________ Just making this world a better place...one bomb at a time!

Trolling minnow bucket user here also. I've not tried it for shad and suspect as hot as it's getting that they might not last long in it. _________________ Jerry Hamon

kayaks and shad. Done it quite a bit. I use a bucket and bubbler too. Treat them just as you would shrimp. The worst thing for shad is heat. Even in my 30 gal livewell on the boat, during the spring/summer, i have to put some ice in the water to keep them cool. Also after you catch them, for the first 5 min they will poo the water up quick. So right before you launch, swap some of that poo water for fresh. You then should be good to go for a few hours. Also don't crowd them. Take only what you think you will need. _________________ I want it ALL! |
